At work this week, a couple of my customers were scrabbling around their pockets and purses, for a few groats to put in the charity pot I have on my bar. In amongst my thanks, and their, ‘they need it more than me’s. Someone said they wish they could do more. Well guess what. You can!
The charity we are talking about is, The Family Haven, and what they do is support vulnerable families, with pre-school children, get back onto their feet, with help and advice pertaining to their particular problems.
So what can you do to help them?
Surprisingly quite a lot, and you don’t even need to put your hand in your pocket.
Do you have any old clothes? For both kids and adults. Does that airing cupboard need a sort out, they will take your old linen, and towels. How about a food parcel? You can bag them up, and drop them off at the Haven, between 10am and 3pm, Monday to Friday. Please give them a ring first, to let them know you’re coming in. If you can’t make it there bring them into the pub, (between 6pm and 11pm, Tuesday to Saturday). I will get them to the Haven. Baby wipes, nappies, and nappy sacks are always useful as well.
“Give as you live”, is one of the greatest ideas I’ve heard of in a long time. When you log onto t’interweb, you can give money to charity, every time you do a search. Everyclick donate money every time you search, shop at your favourite stores, or trade on eBay. All you need to do is click on the link and sign up, et voilà!
Give as you live doesn’t stop there. Thousands of mainstream companies such as Amazon, John Lewis, Play.com, and Boots, to name but a few, have signed up to give 2.5% of any purchase you make to the charity of your choice. All you need to do is click this link. If you take a couple of minutes to sign up, you become eligible for exclusive offers, voucher codes, and even money off!
Now you have set that up, thank you. How about getting a copy of The Family Haven Recipe Book. £3.50 will get you over 30 lovely recipes with which to feed your family. Contributors include Mary Berry and Phil Vickery, and you can get it right here.
Or if you’re feeling extremely flush, maybe you could help with the Haven’s wish list.
Once again, thank you for your time and support, it really means a lot to these new families, that are stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Until next time,
Be dobby, smeck grimly, and skvat jeezny by the sharries droogs!
